Ellen, The Leftovers sounds interesting and also a wee bit eerie. Although a bit intimidating, I will take heart to read it, because I generally prefer lighter works such as comedies or romance. But the plot in this book is so engaging that I will certainly give it a try.

Love this review but I disagree with the notion that Durham was a lot biased in her point of view. I am Albanian and I have studied the period around WWI. Albania was part of the Ottoman Empire till 1912. Serbia and Greece were aggresively trying to get more territories from OE. Albanians wanted freedom. They were being attacked by Ottomans and neighbors at the same time, so on all sides. They were the massacrees. As a result, all her neighbors, got more territories, that were not theirs when they won independence from OT. They were going to get more if President Wilson had not said no at the end of the war. So Durham was realistic in what she wrote. T.Y.

This was my first time reading Perrotta and, while I liked it enough, I wasn't wowed by it. You've addressed key points that really make sense, that describe sort of what I felt as well. On to the next one!

I did really enjoy this book despite the criticisms...like you say, engaging and a quick read. I think I should make a special review category for great commuting books - this was one.

Yeah, I agree with you that there couldn't be a really satisfactory explanation for the event - Perrotta actually probably avoided some huge problems by not attempting to address the "why" of the event. Reading your comment, I am not quite sure what my criticism was...I guess that I would have wanted to see even more of the individual responses to and understandings of the event, although that might have required Perrotta to give so much explanation and backstory that the novel would never move anywhere.

I started reading this book in a library at least a year ago while I was babysitting and found it really engaging and a quick read. I eventually picked up a copy on sale and have been excited to read it. Your critique is along the lines of others I've read though. I'll still read it but temper my expectations.

I really liked this book when I read it last year, but you make some really good criticisms of it, such as the lack of detail concerning the birth of the different religious movements in response to the Sudden Departure. However, it didn't bother me that Perrotta doesn't explain why the Departure in detail; it felt more realistic to me that way. If suddenly millions of people around the world were to vanish, there would be widespread panic, confusion, and desperate attempts to explain what happened, but I don't think we could ever really be able to find a satisfactory answer. Everyone would have their own interpretation of why/how the Sudden Departure happened, but I don't think we could find out what the actual truth was. For me, it felt realistic that the SD remained mysterious.

Nice review :)
